Berriwillock is situated in the Mallee Region of Victoria, 333KM Northwest of Melbourne. Situated on the Calder Highway, approximately halfway between Bendigo and Mildura. 77 km to the West is the township of Swan Hill and the Mighty Murray River. Berriwillock is a small town within the Buloke Shire of approx. 200 people, it has a renowned wheat growing and farming community that has been actively growing grain since 1892.
The Golden Crown Hotel is the local pub, which was built in 1896 by Fairbanks and Wilson from local limestone and bricks which had been made and fired on the banks of the Tyrrell Creek. Legend has it that the name first appeared on a piece of tin nailed on a post in front of the old bag shanty which preceded the present building.
The Berriwillock Post Office opened on the 16th of April 1894 shortly after the arrival of the railway. More detailed information on the Post Office can be found under the HISTORY tab.
Berriwillock has many Community and Sporting clubs which include, The Bowling Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club, Garden Club, and the elusive Berriwillock Surfing Club, though we are yet to host an Australian Longboard Title.
Tynan Park is the local playground and location of the Berriwillock Pool. In late 2023 and early 2024, Tynan Park was extensively renovated as part of the Buloke Shire’s Playspaces Project. This included all new play equipment, multi-ball sport area and new BBQ shelter and picnic tables.
With the closure of the local school back in 1993, School age children are bused 20km north to the township of Sea Lake. Tyrrell College is a P-12 school and St Mary’s Primary School is P-6
Green Lake is a recreational Regional Park located 20km northeast of Berriwillock. Green lake is filled via a pipeline from the Murray River and provides a large lake and surrounding area for all types of water sport, recreation, fishing, camping and caravan facilities.
